The story of the house

One of Bergen's most beautiful rooms has always been about food.

Kjøttbasaren on Vetrlidsallmenningen has been a house of food for almost 150 years. When we moved in we inherited the arches, the brickwork and a long tradition of people meeting here.

Our own story is short by comparison, but it is about the same things: ingredients, craft and hospitality — only with an Italian accent.

1877

Kjøttbasaren opens

Built in brick and natural stone to drawings by architect Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe, as the city's new meat hall. The aim was simple: gather the city's merchants under one roof, with light, air and order.

Trade beneath the arches

For more than a hundred years the arched windows and high ceilings framed meat, fish and trade between Bryggen and the Fish Market. The building became one of Bergen's best known landmarks.

A trattoria in the room

Trattoria Basar fills the old halls with the scent of fresh pasta, the sound of wine glasses and long tables full of guests. We touch the room no more than necessary — it does very well on its own.

The entrance

The stone portal facing Vetrlidsallmenningen

The arched portal is the way into both the building and the evening. Inside, we are steps from Bryggen, the Fløibanen funicular and the Fish Market.
